It has been said that the rich are very different from you and I and no better example of just how different can be found than hedge fund manager Steve Cohen.Mr,Cohen paid ,reportedly,11.85 million doallars for a piece of art entitled."The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living." by the artist Damien Hirst.Obviously a concept piece,it is a shark in a tank of formaldehyde.Apparently,the chemical isn't working too well because the sharch is shape changing and the tank is getting cloudy,a condition that can be addressed in a tank with live fish,but not so easy in this case.I know that the expectation is the newly rich blow their $$ attempting to replicate the standard of living they believe the wealthy to have,but I have to tell you,If I had 11.85 million to blow,I would not blow it on a dead shark.I know art is in the eye of the beholder.I also know that those with money to blow on art hirer consultants to help pick pieces.I know all of that,I still would not put my money there. Mr.Hirst is going to replace the decomposing or morphing shark with a new on of equal size.All parties are happy about this.I am just vexed about it.It bothers me that some shark swimming around out there is going to end up in Mr.Cohen's tank and that it will not be the last one to end up there.If the shark decomposes every ten years or so and the value of the piece must be maintained more than one shark is headed that way.It also vexes me that anyone wants to replace the shark in the first place.The piece IS about death,impossibility and contemplation.I would think having the shark decompose in the ever increased cloudiness of the tank is closer to why the living can't contemplate death.Death is ugly and stinks.What was once beautiful morphs into the elements of nightmares.Nor can I grasp why the shark in a tank is worth that amount of money.A human in the tank I could mabe get( oh don't cringe Please!This is a nation that loves nascar and slows down for wrecks on the highway so it can see the carnage.)Is it moral to own a dead shark in a tank that you have spent 11.85 million dollars on?Is there any obligation one has to spend that money on a more common good?Is it moral to have that much money to play with when you have earned it running a hedge fund?Gotcha!!These are not questions the rich ask.Being rich does not equate being moral.While not mutually exclusive,one is not dependent upon the other.Nor does being poor equate nobility.Or hard labor garruntee honesty.These are all myths each class makes up about the other.Or more importantly about themself.What would you spend 11.85 million on?Perhaps,Mr.Cohen intends to eventually donate his art,so we can all contemplate it.What do you define as art worth 11.85 million?And which art would it be? Warren Buffett sees humans without malaria as art.Bill Gates sees art as a world improved.Apparently,both men contemplate death without finding the task impossible.What would my work of art be?
